this is such a quick and easy project, i'm not even sure i can call this a tutorial. and it's such a cute and clever idea that i can't possibly be the first genius mama to figure it out (but i'm not even going to google it to find out).
nevertheless, i think they turned out so stinkin' cute that i just had to share!
it's so super easy, and so super cute. no sewing needed! no excuses! i promise it will take you longer to read this post than it will to make the cape.
super-hero capes are one of those projects that have been on my 'to-make' lists FOREVER. i know the kids would love them, and i know they are a super easy sewing project, but for some reason i just never got around to it. and each time i think about buying some, i talk myself out of it with the old 'nah, i can just make them myself' bit.
so, adella's school field day is coming up. their theme is 'super heroes', and they are allowed to wear costumes or capes, or any super-hero garb that they want. and there's nothing like a little pressure to get me motivated to DO something.
we picked out some fabric, i started thinking about the measurements, binding, and other details... of course griffin wanted one too... and i started calculating the amount of sewing time i might actually have vs. what i needed.
and suddenly this idea popped into my head! hooray! a couple of t-shirts, a few simple scissor snips and five minutes later, the kids were donning capes and flying around the house, out the door, and into the front yard.
******
here's what to do:
find a t-shirt that you don't mind cutting. i used some too-small long sleevers with stripes. (you can never go wrong with stripes!)
grab a pair of scissors.
lay the shirt face down in front of you.
make a cut from the bottom right-hand edge of the shirt up to the right-hand shoulder seam at the neckline.
do NOT cut through the neckband of the shirt.
now do the same thing on the left-hand side.
it doesn't even have to be exactly even -- it won't matter in the end, really.
next, cut around the front side, right underneath the neckband, from one shoulder to the other.
now it should look something like this:
okay -- now look! you're done!
slip it over your kid's head and watch them fly!
an afterthought: you can use the sleeves to make some armbands for your super hero! or, if your shirt sleeve is larger, use it as a hairband. if it's much larger, use it as a headband!
another thought: an alternate option is to cut the neckband in the center and sew (or glue!) velcro to either side, so that it can attach that way. you could also use a snap.
***we all know the level of safety involved with children having bands or other things around their necks --please use your very best judgement and supervision where neckbands are involved!!***
i hope you enjoy this little project!
if you make one, i'd love to hear about it. better yet, send me a link to your photo so i can check it out!
*please remember that this project is for personal use only. please do not sell any items made from this tutorial. feel free to link to this page, but do not copy this tutorial or take any of my photos without asking. i'm happy to share, but stealing makes me sad.*
